Dementia is explained as when a person is experiencing significant changes in thinking that negatively impact his/her daily activities. Alzheimer’s disease is the leading cause of dementia.
A common cause of dementia is Frontotemporal Degeneration, particularly in people under the age of 60. A common early sign of FTD is martial issues. The personality changes are often misinterpreted and it isn’t until the symptoms progress that the disease is recognized for what it is rather than a personal being problematic or different.
A neuropsychological evaluation can determine if the changes in thinking go beyond normal aging and the pattern of results can indicate the cause of the changes, like Alzheimer’s disease.
These are the most common changes seen in people who have Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia.
A person with Alzheimer’s disease may experience:
- Forgetfulness
- Easy distractions
- Problems with organization
- Confusion about their surroundings; getting lost
